About us

A software company that decided not to charge for software.

By Trends LTD is a small, independent company registered in Bulgaria. We design, build, host and support every project ourselves — and we release all of it free of charge, funded by advertising and by people who choose to donate.

Our mission

To provide genuinely useful services free of charge — supported by voluntary donations and advertising, never by charging the people we set out to help.

That sentence is the whole company. It means the price is zero and stays zero — not free for a trial, not free until you need the feature that matters, not free if you give us your email first. When somebody opens one of our projects, they get all of it.

It also means we carry the cost instead. Hosting, domains, maintenance and support are paid for by ad revenue on the projects where advertising belongs, and by donations from people who found something worth keeping alive. Neither is ever required of you.

Why we work this way

The people who most need a tool are usually the ones least able to buy one.

The observation

Small, solvable problems sit behind paywalls that shouldn't exist.

A driver studying for a licensing exam is, almost by definition, not earning yet — and prep courses charge them anyway. A student building a first website can't justify a template marketplace subscription. Someone tracking a car's servicing needs a structured record far more than they need another monthly bill.

In each case the underlying work is finite: write the question bank once, build the template once, get the maintenance intervals right once. Charging per person for something already built is a business decision, not a technical necessity. We made a different one.

The approach

Build it small, run it cheap, hand it over.

Free only works if free is sustainable, so cost discipline is a design constraint from the first line. Our projects run on modest infrastructure with few moving parts and no expensive dependencies — which is why a reasonable amount of ad revenue and a handful of donations genuinely covers them.

Every project also has to earn its place. One clear job, done properly, obvious within the first minute, and working fully on a phone rather than only on a desktop. If a feature doesn't help the person using it, it doesn't ship.

The line we hold

Advertising pays some bills. It doesn't get to set the terms.

We run ads on projects where they fit — a library you browse, a site you read. They stay in their slots, they don't chase you around the internet, and blocking them never blocks the content.

Where a project holds personal records, we run no advertising at all. Vehxia makes no third-party requests whatsoever — it self-hosts even its fonts — and is kept online by donations alone. We don't sell personal data and we don't build advertising profiles from what people tell our apps. That isn't a policy we'd trade for revenue; it's the reason the model has to stay modest.

What we make

Three projects live, in two different shapes.

Apps that help. taxi-exam.online prepares drivers for Croatia's taxi licensing exam with the full official question bank, timed simulations and weak-point drilling. vehxia.com keeps a complete maintenance, cost and document record for every vehicle you own, and turns it into a service history a buyer will believe.

Content worth having. thetheme.store gives away 60 website templates and real installable WordPress, WooCommerce and OpenCart themes — free for personal and commercial use, with no account and no email address required.

Different audiences, one rule. See all three in detail →

“Only build tools worth using yourself — and then don't put a price on the people who need them most.”

Pavel Nozharov is the Company Director of By Trends LTD and its Head of Development. He holds both roles in a literal sense: he sets the company's direction and commercial decisions, and he is also the person writing the code, running the servers and answering the support mail.

That combination is deliberate, and it's what makes the free model workable. There's no gap between the person deciding what the company can afford and the person who knows exactly what each project costs to run. Decisions about what to build, what to keep free and when a project has outgrown its budget are made by someone who sees both sides of the ledger at once.

In practice it also means there is nothing between a user and the developer. Report a bug and it reaches the person who can fix it. Suggest a feature and it reaches the person who decides. Ask a question about how your data is handled and it's answered by the person who wrote the storage layer — not read off a script.

Pavel oversees every project By Trends operates, from the initial specification through to hosting, maintenance and the decision about how each one is funded.

The economics

Where the money actually comes from — and where it goes.

We'd rather be plain about this than vague. There are exactly two revenue sources, and neither of them is you being charged.

SOURCE 01

Advertising

Shown on projects where browsing and reading is the point — the template library, the exam practice material. It sits in fixed slots, doesn't interrupt the task, and never gates the content behind it. Ad blockers are welcome; we'd rather you got the thing.

SOURCE 02

Voluntary donations

Given after the fact by people who found something useful. A donation unlocks nothing, because nothing was locked. No tiers, no badges, no supporter-only features, and no repeat reminders once you've given.

SPENT ON

Keeping it online

Hosting, domains, email delivery for reminders, and the development time to keep three live projects working. Anything beyond that goes into building the next free project rather than into a margin.

Support our work

Free costs something. Just not to you.

If one of our projects saved you a fee, a failed exam or an afternoon of work, a donation helps keep it online and makes the next one possible. It's optional, it's one-off, and it unlocks precisely nothing — because you already have everything.

No tiers · No perks · No reminders · Nothing to cancel
